Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Baseball

1. The Ultimate Challenge
Hitting a round ball with a round bat. The feeling I would get when I hit the ball. Just think of a baby that is crying for food. When that baby gets her bottle the first thing you hear is that ahhhhh sound. Oh that ah. When I hit a ball perfectly I would have that ahhhhh.

2. I call it Contentment at a high level.
I played all the time when I was a kid. Some of my favorite memories were from the diamond. When I hit two home runs in one game off the star pitcher form our High School team. I rounded the bases in full view of our High School coach. I was glowing. When I hit a game ending home run off Jay Klein. He thought I could only hit singles. Rounding the bases of redemption was a another special moment for me. When I broke up two no hitters from the star, city league pitcher. I felt like I had made the grade, and that was awesome.

3. Easy watching
I can sit in my favorite chair and root for Derek Jeter to hit one up the gap. Holding my breath with every pitch delivered to him. Or, I can sit and read the paper and view the events of the game through the corner of my eye. Either way is ok with me.

4. I am amazed by what Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig accomplished in their careers.
I look at old film footage, or read about either The Babe or Larripin Lou and always feel awed by the big numbers they both put on the board. From home runs to RBIs to batting average to runs scored, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig achieved over and over again.

5. Double my pleasure.
I could play baseball and get a tan at the same time.

6. My sons played and my daughter still plays.
I have had the pleasure of sharing joyous moments with my children. Times that I will not forget. Like when my daughter got the game winning hit against Fair Lawn High School last year. We won 1-0. I was jumping up and down. I was so excited. I was so happy she delivered.

7. I love all of the statistics.
Did you ever see so many stats? Runs, RBIs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, stolen bases etc..... Comparing eras, or comparing players. Duos like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig - how do they stack up against other twosomes. Who had the highest batting average in a three or four or five year stint? So many statistics to choose form. It is endless.

8. A place to excel
I loved taking a hit away from the batter. I felt great stealing a base. Why is it that stealing is bad except in baseball? My satisfaction was heightened by a solid hit. This was the best. Ahhhh. I especially felt great rounding the bases after hitting a homer. I think I know how Babe Ruth felt when he whacked one.

9. My favorite team is the Yankees.
Of all the teams I root for in all the professional sports I watch the Yankees are the only team that wins on a fairly regular basis. All my other teams usually lose. It feels good when my team wins.

10 I love the stories.
Like the story Mickey Mantle tells of the time when he first joined the Yankees. He was not hitting well. His confidence was dwindling. After days of desperation he called his father when he was playing near Oklahoma. Mickey Mantle was hoping his father would give him a pep talk. But when Muck Mantle got to the hotel room where Mickey and the New York Yankees were staying. Muck did not give his son a pep talk. He did the opposite. Mickey's father told Mickey that he was there to pick up his son and bring him home. Mickey's father said that he did not know he raised a quitter. Mickey Mantle got the message. He started to hit after his father left. He attributes that meeting with his father as a turning point in his career. I have heard Mickey Mantle tell that story a few times on tape or live. Whenever I hear him tell it I am moved by Mickey's love for his father.

11. It is just the greatest game.

Slow Pitch Softball Bat Rules and Regulations

If you are looking to buy a slow pitch softball bat you need to know what is and what is not an "acceptable" bat. Sanctioning organizations are very strict on bat rules and regulations, understandably so, to maintain fairness in the sport of slow pitch softball. Those rules include the following:

Size and Weight. Slow pitch softball bats should be 34 inches long at most, have a 2 ¼-inch diameter at the thickest part and have a weight ranging from 26 to 30 oz.

Certifications. All slow pitch softball bats should have certification stamps from sanctioning organizations in order to be allowed for play in official tournaments. These stamps should be permanently marked, and not look like they were decaled. As of January 2013, new rules have been put in place by softball's three most important sanctioning bodes, ASA, USSSA and NSA. USSSA no longer honors ASA stamps (ASA-stamped bats are for ASA tournaments only, with old ASA stamps still being honored). ASA wood bat tournaments require ASA stamps too. USSSA tournaments no longer accepts bats without the new USSSA 1.20 BPF. NSA tournaments, however, will allow bats with old stamps for at least another year.

Damaged Bats. Externally heavily damaged bats, according to ASA and USSSA rules, will not allowed for play.

Bat Alteration/Doctoring. The official "philosophy" of slow pitch softball organizations are that players should know if their bats have been altered. Claiming that they are not aware will not excuse them from punishment. Organizations take violations on altered bat rules seriously, where penalties may include a fine of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars and/or a lifetime ban.

USSSA authorizes directors in sanctioned tournaments to ask to inspect bats at anytime. A player's refusal to submit their bat to inspection will automatically qualify them to a suspension of up to two years. The owner of a duly inspected bat that has been officially ruled altered, meanwhile, will receive a suspension of up to five years if a first-time violator and a lifetime ban if a repeat violator.

A bat is deemed altered or doctored if it has been found physically modified from its original out-of-the-box form. Most alterations are done on non-wood bats, although cases of alterations on wood have been reported in the bast.

Bat altering practices include:

Painting. A "painted bat" is one in which a banned bat is painted to look like a legal one. Organizations ban certain bat models if they have been found unable to comply with standards (such as the 1.20 BPF) for the rest of their lives. Lists of banned bats can be found on the organizations' websites.

Painting a banned bat to make it appear authentic calls for intricate skills, and indeed to the unaided or unknowledgeable eye a carefully painted bat can look the real thing.

Shaving. Shaving can be done on both the barrel and the handle. When shaving the barrel, the top cap is taken off and a lathe is inserted into the hollow barrel. The wall is shaved to a desired thickness/thinness, and the cap replaced. The aim is to enhance the trampoline effect. With a thinner wall, the bat is now more flexible-and less durable. Shaved-barrel bats are much more likely to dent and crack.

A bat's handle is shaved to make the bat able to bend and whip back further. A shaved handle is actually easier to conceal because it can be layered with tape or grip.

End Loading. Bats are classified as either balanced or end-loaded. Balanced bats have their heavier part closer to the handle, while end-loaded bats have it closer to the barrel. End-loaded bats swing farther and faster. A typical end-loading procedure is done by removing the metal rod or weighted rings located at the knob (which makes the barrel heavier). Another method requires that the end cap be removed and a weight inserted into the barrel.

Accelerated Break-In. ABI, though legal, is sometimes considered another form of bat alteration. This is because it speeds up the normal break-in time of a composite bat. Composite bats are known to improve in performance for every use, but it will not happen until the bats are fully broken in.

Who Will Win the 2013 NL Cy Young Award?

As any baseball fan will tell you, no MLB season ever starts like it is supposed to. The Los Angeles Dodgers are supposed to be the favorite to win the NL West pennant over the San Francisco Giants and both teams are wallowing in the NL West basement. The Atlanta Braves were supposed to challenge the Washington Nationals for the NL East pennant, but the Braves currently hold the lead in the standings by three games.

It is really early to try and get a read on the teams, but there are pitchers who are establishing paces that could lead them to Cy Young contention for this season. The NL is home to a lot of great pitchers and many of them are already off to better starts than most people ever expected.

Clayton Kershaw - Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers may be struggling at this early point in the season, but ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw is not. Kershaw has a 2-2 record and a 1.88 ERA to start the season, but that is not what is impressing people. In 28 2/3 innings pitched, Kershaw has 30 strikeouts to only eight walks. He has shown the kind of control that will keep him in contention for the NL Cy Young all season long.

Matt Harvey - New York Mets

People wondered why the Mets seemed to unaffected by losing last year's Cy Young winner in R.A. Dickey. It could be because the Mets knew that they had Matt Harvey waiting in the wings. So far this season, Harvey has a 4-0 record and a 0.93 ERA. He has pitched 29 innings and has accumulated 32 strikeouts versus only nine walks. This is Harvey's first season as a full-time starter, so we will have to see if he can keep this pace up all season long.

Madison Bumgarner - San Francisco Giants

Bumgarner has been struggling for a couple of seasons now, but this year he seems to be back on track. He has a 3-0 record and a 2.05 ERA. The ERA is not going to win him a Cy Young, but his 27 strikeouts compared to only seven walks could. He has given up 17 hits in 26 1/3 innings pitched, which is pretty impressive if he can keep it up for the rest of the year.

Paul Maholm - Atlanta Braves

It is getting harder and harder to ignore the Braves' pitching when it comes to the Cy Young discussions. Maholm is 3-1 on the season with a 1.03 ERA. He has 25 strikeouts compared to eight walks, which is good, but he will have to improve those numbers if he wants to be on the final Cy Young ballot when the season is over. There are a lot of young pitchers that are just starting to pick up some steam that could knock Maholm out of the running. But at this point, he has to be considered a favorite.

The Toronto Bluejays are Once Again Relevant in Major League Baseball With Only Two Transactions

Last week the Bluejays said goodbye to a chunk of their future, in exchange for blistering speed at the top of their lineup, two solid starting pitchers, and two very useful players in the acquisition of Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, John Buck and Emilio Bonifacio.

On Friday afternoon, Bluejays GM Alex Anthopoulos made his second splash in a week by signing free agent left fielder Melky Cabrera to a 2-year 16-million dollar contract.

Cabrera was leading the National League in batting average at .346 with the San Francisco Giants until he was suspended for testing positive for heightened levels of testosterone.

And so, in one week the Bluejays who were at a franchise low with the debacle surrounding the loss of John Farrell to the rival Red Sox have now been elevated to a franchise high since the team last won the World Series with Joe Carter's Championship winning home run in 1993.

There were blips of positivity in between. The signing of Roger Clemens brought some excitement for a couple of seasons, but the roster around Clemens never matched his performance levels and he was soon dealt to the hated Yankees.

In late 2005, starting pitcher AJ Burnett and BJ Ryan were signed to large contracts which brought some excitement and hope to Toronto fans, but this was short-lived as both were disappointing in their performances, never justifying the size of their compensation.

After the debacle of these two signings, the Bluejays proceeded with the shedding of expensive contracts. Vernon Wells and Alex Rios were traded and released. Cy Young winning pitcher, Roy Halladay was traded to Philadelphia because he told management that he would not re-sign with the club.

Toronto has been in rebuilding mode ever since, restocking the farm system and signing one-year contracts with free agents so the team to reap compensatory draft selections.

But now, things are different. The philosophy of Alex Anthopoulos for having a conveyor belt of players coming through the system shall remain. What has changed is the decision on behalf of the Rogers Communications ownership team to now throw their financial might behind Anthopoulous. Rogers is technically the richest owner of any team in the Majors with a Market Cap of approximately $20 billion and they have now proven their belief in the overall project by increasing payroll to the region of $125 million with the recent trade and signing.

It's doubtful that Anthopoulos is finished with his off-season moves at this point. In acquiring John Buck from the Marlins, the Bluejays now have Buck and JP Arencibia with triple-A Catcher Travis D'Arnaud pushing for playing time and drawing comparisons to Giants' MVP catcher Buster Posey. Given some of the redundancies on the roster, more moves appear likely.

The Red Sox were mired in last place in the AL East with a recently gutted roster. The Yankees are all one year older with fixtures and future Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera coming off long term injuries. Tampa can't afford to invest and Baltimore will have to prove 2012 was no anomaly. It all adds up to the fact that the Bluejays are poised to be figured as favourites come April 2013. In fact, several bookmakers have already severely lowered their odds of winning the World Series from 40 to 1 longshots down to under 10 to 1. In fact the only teams with lower odds at the time of writing were the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals.

One thing is clear: the Toronto Bluejays are relevant again.

The list is endless and players who are going through a "lucky streak" will often wear the same hats, use the same gloves and even wear the same shirts for each game, no matter how battered they are.

I Can't Wait! We Are Going to Cooperstown

My heart soared. We were going to take another trip to The Baseball Hall of Fame. One of my favorite places on earth. Just like the first trip to Upstate New York. I wanted to see the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb and Yogi Berra. one more time.

What I saw that day has stayed with me at the depths of my being, to this very day. More about that later.

As we walked into the building in the spring of 1999 I was greeted by two giant size replicas of two great hitters Ted Williams and Babe Ruth. I loved seeing the Babe again. "My friend Babe Ruth. Hello. Hey Ted, you look pretty good." I remember saying. I found it very interesting that I and most people (if you stood under seven foot five inches) would have to look up to see these two sculptured figures.

My wife and I strolled through the museum looking at the artifacts. We adored the old gloves, spikes, balls, bats and uniforms that were encased in their glass display bins. These items brought me back to a time and place before television, radar guns and luxury boxes. I was getting very nostalgic.

We soon entered the wing that housed the Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire artifacts. This Home Run Wing was abundant with Sosa and McGwire memorabilia. This was like being in a home run baseball fantasy park. There were huge posters of both men. There were posters of each man's list of home runs.. When they hit them and what pitcher gave up that particular home run. There were bats they used in games and balls they hit over the fences Amazing. Never had two major league men hit so many home runs in one year. Upon leaving that wing I could not help but feel overwhelmed by the slugging feats of these two huge men. One a Cub and one a Cardinal.

We continued to stroll through the hall until we came up to a narrow wing that I did not remember from my previous visit. I looked down the left side of the corridor and saw a group of pictures. Hanging from wires, these colorful paintings were displayed at my eye level. Perfect for me. I had to see these pictures. I was compelled. to walk down this aisle. The first picture as I entered the area was of Babe Ruth. His bat was over his shoulder. His face was wrought with age. He looked a little old, a wee bit tired heavy and somewhat overweight. As I stared at the picture I got very sad. I could see that his career was about to end.

Next painting was of Lou Gehrig. A smiling Lou Gehrig. I felt so happy just to be in the presence of one of my all time heroes. Even if it was just a picture. Then there was one of Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams standing on the dugout steps Their bodies were angled toward each other. I enjoyed the joy they seemed to have just being there. Ready to play another game. There were other paintings one of Jackie Robinson, another of Ty Cobb and another of Honus Wagner that I loved.

Gazing toward the end of the row of paintings I saw a glass case with what looked like a tan baseball glove inside. This seemed very weird in that all the players that were depicted in the paintings were from an era when dark brown gloves were used. . I felt confused. This mitt did not seem to belong here. I just had to see whose glove this was.

I could not believe my eyes. It was not a glove. It was a sculpture of a glove. Perfect in size. Detailed so exact that the grayish colored seams were complete in length width and color. The depth of this piece was ideal What this sculptor had captured amazed me. I thought about the time he invested in creating this piece. About how much this person must have loved baseball that he took the time to mold a piece equipment. I visualized he sitting in his workroom playing with clay to make this piece real. I called my wife to come see this incredible piece. We both were moved. I even cried.

I was given a glimpse of one of the greatest pieces of art I had ever seen. I have been to major museums and have seen painting by Van Gough, Picasso, and Dahli... I have seen the Thinker by Rodin. I have never been moved like I was by the glove.

Whenever I think of the Hall of Fame my mind jumps to the glove. I do not know if this piece is there any more. It did have a price tag of $8500 when I was there so it may have been moved.

But if you get the chance to see the glove I suggest you take a look.

When Did Baseball Start Using a Bullpen?

Have you ever wondered why the bullpen is called a bullpen and when baseball started to use it? The term "bullpen" has been in use since the Civil War, when it was used to describe the cramped conditions at Union prison camps. The term got its start as a description of how cattle are herded from one place to another. The narrow corridor created by fencing that was used to guide the cattle was called a bull pen and the term stuck with ranchers. It was also a place where cattle were kept prior to moving them from one ranch to another.

But how does a term that is used to describe cattle ranching find its way into the "Great American Pastime"? One of the theories is that the term "bullpen" has nothing to do with cattle ranches at all. Some people speculate that the term "bullpen" was applied to 19th century prisons where prisoners were kept in narrow rooms guarded by large, bullish men. Another theory speculates that the term was originally applied to the small pen used to hold a rodeo bull just before the bull is launched into the rodeo arena. But none of that explains how such a colorful term made it into the baseball vocabulary.

In the late 1800's, teams started to create their own areas where pitchers could warm up before games. Relief pitchers did not become common until after the 1910's, so there was no need for a warm-up area during the game. That is why starting pitchers would warm up next to the homerun fence in the outfield. Back in those days, Bull Durham was a popular tobacco company and MLB sponsor that had ads on homerun fences all around the league. Since starting pitchers would decide to warm up near the Bull Durham ads, the term "bullpen" started to be used.

Once ballparks started to construct enclosed bullpens near the foul territories along the first and third base lines, the concept of a bullpen started to take hold. Starting pitchers moved their pregame warm-ups to the bullpen, and teams started putting benches in the bullpens to keep relief pitchers handy in case they needed to start warming up.

When the Polo Grounds in New York was built in 1880, the pitching warm-up area was built as a pen near the bull stockyards that were adjacent to the ballpark. Over the decades, all of these factors melted together to create the bullpen.

Teams started to utilize the bullpen, and a more liberal relief pitcher strategy, in the late 1910's. But there were still pitchers on into the 1920's who would start 40 and 50 games a season and routinely pitch complete games. One important key area in the baseball game is the signals between the catcher as well as the pitcher. The sign is given by the catcher who gives the sign by holding four fingers pointing towards the ground in the kind of pitch he want from the pitcher. For instance, a combination of three fingers means a changeup, two means slide up and one finger means fastball. The pitcher seeing the signal usually nods and then throws.

Along with other baseball signals, including, baseball pitching signs, one should also keep an eye on the coach for different defensive signals. He may show a slight tug on his cap, scratch his nose, etc. All these are meant for defensive signals.
